Various - Mojuba Box - BMus Every singel Mojuba 12inch up to date is a must have, but to have them together in an strictly limited box is more than i've ever expected - i was lucky to get all releases since the stunning "oracy - family day", but thought that there's no real chance to get the deep & soulful "vibe" & "minimal summer" 12's that i've missed - now i got them on a limited clear vinyl! And more, the new ep (record no.9) with the ultra deep and hypnotic "feel" by Sven Weisemann is imo one of the best tracks he produced so far, also Oracy's "awakening" with it's dirty drum programming that reminds me a bit of Theo Parrish's "sound sculpture lp" is a future classic. The last track on the new 12" is by Roosevelt's & Charles "monastery" - a more spherical, soulful deep-house mover...

Deftones - Deftones - arbitrary.tracking Angry? Your girlfriend/boyfriend cheated on you? Sick and tired of everything? Then get this! This release is just what you need. It's full of aggressiveness, harsh guitar playing and yelling. Starting off with "Hexagram", going on with "Needles and Pins", "Minerva" and "Bloody Cape". Don't listen to what they sing, it might distract you. The sound, and only the sound itself, will get you back in order relieving your mind. Advice: turn up the volume to loud(est) and repeatedly play tracks 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9...
One helluva CD! |
Daft Punk - Aerodynamic - spawnofdonato "Aerodynamic" is pure Daft Punk gold, the highlight of Discovery, in my personal opinion. It may have been partially played to death via the media, but it's one of their best known tracks for a reason. The last minute still gives me chills. "Aerodynamite", however, leaves much to be desired. I like the intro a lot, but the rest of the song is way too long and way too repetitive. It's boring, frankly. The packaging is really simple, but the graphic on the sleeve's cover is pretty cool. |
Nightschool* - Do You Speak French? - DyscoSouljah I picked this record up on a flea market, and based myself only on the cover -including nipple slip- and the producer -Jean Kluger-. Assuming this record was quite early to be a Belgian disco track, I didn't think too much of it.
But then I played it and found myself in 7th heaven. I quickly did some research, but unfortunately without any luck. Not much is known on this group. This is premium quality disco. The consistency of the loop, the guitar riff which changes over every 8th beat, the pounding bass and the additional hand clap through the chorus, make you feel like moving all night long. It gave me the feel of good monotone house track. However, there came those angels voices right from heaven with sweet violins in the background to stress that wonderful feeling, combined with the heavy Barry White masculine voice learning his girls how to speak French. Translating the word bikini from English to French alone makes you laugh. The "pimp"-voice tells a story without sentences, just speaking out words which the girls need to translate in French. And let me tell you, they do a fantastic job, and put all their enthusiasm into it. Parlez-vous francais?
This is a feel-good song, and will definitely be in the top of my chart for a very long time. I love it!
We might not ever win Eurovision-contest again, but back in those days Belgium ruled in its own kind of disco way...
Once again 12 points to Belgium!!!

dEUS - Worst Case Scenario - karlrichard While I'm not a particular dEUS fan (electronic music really rocks my world, see) I had a dream set to this sound track last night... And so this morning I found myself really wanting to write a review about this album. Why? Well, partly because it affected me so deeply upon first listening to it many moons ago... But mainly because it farking rocks!!! I remember that friend, totally out of the blue, recommended it to me when we were record shopping. I think we were in Glastonbury town, Somerset, in the only record shop worth visiting... Tor Records! And as he knew of my heavily biased electronic, jazz and folk preferences, I was initially somewhat surprised with his recommendation. Having heard some of dEUS's previous stuff, I had never been impressed enough with their song writing skills or musical style to consider ever checking them out again. But low and behold, one listen of this, and I was left gob smacked at their sheer genius!!!
Released back in 1994, this is a deeply insightful and figurative simile for modern day living, all interwoven with as much raw energy, imagination and sensibility as any rock band should muster. To add to that, this energy and rawness is countered beautifully by melancholic interludes, poignant remorse, and melodic feelings. Right from the outset with the intro, you know that this is going to be an abstract journey into the minds, memories and aesthetics of dEUS themselves... "Listen to me", spoken in French, reveals their European origins (themselves being from Belgium), and once I started, I couldn't stop.
But what really sets this album apart from their other efforts is the way they word play and fuse together a never ending flow of ideas into a seamless blend of stories and analogies. Jigsaw You depicts rather beautifully the throw away nature of our thoughts, most of which seem to be single serving: one pop and it's gone, unusable and unsuitable for new experiences and expressions. Right As Rain wouldn't be out of place in a Wild Western mining town; filled with remorse about the cheap thrills and rides we all partake in, saying we've lived as best as we could, through all the pain that we've felt... Devoid of any certain meaning, and yet we still do what we do without question. But in between all the melancholic modes, it still carries enough light heartedness to balance the insights and regrets. Via lifts the heart and makes me shake my body and soul to it musical sound track... But what's the point describing what it means to me... It'll no doubt shift meanings from someone else's point of view.
Along with clear creative mixing, it's set in a style that could almost be likened to Steely Dan's own crystal productions... Instruments separating in the mix beautifully, giving space and feeling for their ideas to breath and flow. Flow! That's it... This album's flow demonstrates the pure poetry behind the arrangement on all levels! dEUS must have written them so that they languidly coalesced like this into one another...
No less than an epic journey, it could easily be my sound track to life... This is dEUS at the pinnacle of their creative powers. Lively and tender, yet abstract and hurting, its meanings shift with your place in time... Yet it all still manages to carry that poignant power it had when you first heard it. A truly timeless wonder! dEUS... You're genius! |
Blake Baxter - Energizer - gdint Blake baxter is the master of pumpin basses and the trax energiser prove it by itself.
This is effectively a energizing trax, it's far from being happy house though. On the contrary, it's a serious groove with a hip hop influence which is a caracteristic of many Blake's trax's moods.
This is bouncing underground sound straight from detroit. It is infectious and if the track is rightly put in the mix, the people mostly get nervous asking for more. |
Plastikman - Nostalgik.2 - gdint These are geometric and mathematic tracks.
The construction and the sound of these tracks may appear strange, unusual, but it's quite mecanical though. It's very experimental and creative concernig the composition of the track but it is also a very effective tool for a dj set, it just need to be adequatly used.
I think these trax are an explicit example of what abstract techno is. This genre being to my mind an improvement of richie Hawtin in the field of electronic music.
Recommanded for those who like tracks with only dry drums such as spastik, also from plastikman.

Akufen - Québec Nightclub - gdint This is quite a unique release, one of the best german minimal release post 2000 to my opinion.
The sound is really in the german minimal style but it's not cold neither annoying as some german releases may appear. On the contrary, it's totally bouncing, full of sound precily cut and wonderfully arranged. We wonder how Akufen made it to put so much on these tracks and yet to keep it groovy and impressive the way it is.

Pink Floyd - Meddle - djcarnage For me this is the ultimate Pink Floyd release. Especially because of the track Echoes which perfectly covers the change in the psychedelic style towards the "new" style they had with Dark Side. Everything just fits, the lyrics are brilliant, the guitar riffs are still revolutionary (the way they play the melody is just awesome). The break, where they create all these noises on their guitar and than the buildup to the second part where it goes all out. Super!
One Of These Days is a timeless track which still has so much power and energy in it. YOu could play it 35 years ago, you can play it nowadays and we will definately play it in 50 years.
Another track that catches my attention is San Tropez, the ultimate feelgood track. Always makes me feel like we're back in the 30's. Probably because the piano melody which sound a bit big band/ratpack-a-like.
The other tracks are all very good, even though I'm not fond of Seamus. But they are a bit typical for that time. |
Various - Mojuba Box - Nitrous_McBread This is a breathtaking, awesome, monumental release, and has already usurped Mask100 as the holy grail for dance music collectors. Fans who didn't get one are sick with envy and it is reportedly already being traded for astronomical sums, and only set to go up and up in value. Mojuba has proved itself to be one of the freshest, most innovative deep House labels there is, with a stunning run of brilliant releases, and this extremely limited treasure is their way of saying thankyou to their hardcore innersanctum of supporters.
Make no mistake - these beautiful, individually-numbered white boxes are already mythical items in the dance music community. By the time most people heard that one of the most collectible labels in the world was making just 111 copies of a boxset compiling all their releases to date - plus an ultra-limited new one - on clear vinyl, it was already too late: they'd long since been snapped up. And for the amazingly lucky people who managed to get one, they're the proud owner of a massively desirable item whose legend can only increase in years to come... |
